Applying to Multiple Schools when One ‘fits’

Submitted Question:

I am 100% positive that I want to stay and work in Washington State (Seattle). Is there any reason to broaden my applications beyond the Seattle U and Wash U?

Given your numbers and desire to stay in the state, Washington University seems to be a perfect fit. Still, with that in mind, it would be prudent to send out 4-5 more applications. I would recommend sending two or three applications to Wash U peer schools (Minnesota and WUSTL come to mind) in hopes of obtaining scholarships that you can use to negotiate a better financial aid package at Wash U. As you are in-state at Wash U, it isn’t extremely likely that your package will be improved beyond your standard reduced tuition, but even a minor improvement adds up to thousands of dollars over your law school enrollment.

Further, in addition to Seattle University, you should apply to at least one other safety (Lewis and Clark?) with a similar hope of gaining a scholarship that can be used to improve your Seattle University offer. You might as well try and make your backup law school as cheap as possible, right?
